“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Prov. 31:10, KJV). God desires for all of His daughters to be virtuous women, as they grow both in Him and on the earth. The status of this kind of woman is not set aside for only a select few. It is a gift that God will give to each of his daughters, if they will seek Him with their whole hearts and ask Him for it.
What does it mean to be virtuous? You may actually find the answer surprising! The Blue Letter Bible describes it using words such as, “strength, might, efficiency, wealth, army”. So, virtue is not a weak quality, but rather one of might. Yet, this quality is rare. There are many women in our day and age that believe strength is found in being like men and doing the man’s job, but is that actually the case? The virtuous woman is very strong and yet her strength comes from the fear of the Lord (Prov. 31:30). She knows that God has a specific job for her and that He has designed roles for both male and female. Ephesians 5:22-24 states, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing”. The role of the wife is to submit to her husband. The passage goes on to speak of the husband’s role, though; “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church” (Eph. 5:25-29). Husbands are to love their wives and not abuse their authority over them. When a husband and wife are in Christ, and are living in accordance with God’s word, their relationship will be beautiful.
One does not need to be married in order to be virtuous, though. Ruth was not married when Boaz said that she was a virtuous woman (Ruth 3:11). God can develop this quality in His children through different means and He is not one to be placed in a box. Let us ask God to make us virtuous women.
