Why Memorize?

Memorizing is not the easiest thing in the world, for me. I mean, I can memorize something when I put my mind to it, but I don’t necessarily have a photographic memory. God has been prompting me in this area for quite some time, now, and I want to point out the importance for all Christians to spend time not only reading the Word of God but also memorizing His Word. I think there are quite a few believers who are even afraid of the word memorization, but it doesn’t have to (and it shouldn’t) be that way.

Today, I was able to see a friend compete in a Bible quizzing competition. It’s amazing to see people, of all ages, who are dedicated enough to memorize large portions of scripture. Even if they didn’t make it to the finals in the competition, they have filled their minds with the truth of Scripture, and that is something that can be a great asset in their daily lives.

Why is memorizing God’s Word so important? I’d like to point out just a few reasons for memorizing Scripture.

  1. Through memorizing Scripture, we can notice and avoid sin (Psalm 119:11).

  2. Through memorizing Scripture, we may be instructed in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).

  3. Paul the Apostle commanded the church in Colosse to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom” (Colossians 3:16 a, KJV).

So, memorization of the Bible is definitely important. If you struggle to remember God’s Word, ask Him to help you. He is the One who created your mind, and He is more than capable of helping you in this area!
